Learn-to-Skate Class Descriptions

Below are brief descriptions of the elements learned in each level of learn-to-skate classes. Please note that mastering the elements in any level can take from 10 to 30 weeks depending on how often a skater practices between classes. Individual progression rates vary. Speak to your class coach or the Skating School Director with any thoughts or questions throughout your class session.

Adult – The Adult Class is designed for beginner through intermediate level adult skaters ages 18+. Coaches work with skaters in small groups within the class to teach new skills as well as perfect the skills already learned. No prerequisites required

Beginner Tot – Designed for children ages 3 -5. Our Tot Specialists focus on teaching skills in a fun, game oriented environment. Skaters will learn the proper way to fall, get back up, march in place and march across the rink. Prerequisite: children should be able to follow instruction and have a desire to learn to ice skate

Advanced Tot – Designed for children ages 3 – 5 who have completed the Tot 1 and 2 levels in Group Classes. Prerequisite: Master Beginner Tot class elements

Intro I – Designed for children ages 6+. Instruction focuses on the proper way to fall down and stand back up, marching across the ice, snowplow stop preparation, beginning two foot glides and exercises that build up to and reinforce those skills. No prerequisites required

Intro II – Instruction focuses on the beginning forward swizzles, snowplow stops, two foot and beginning one foot glides, backwards wiggles and exercises that build up to and reinforce those skills. Prerequisite: Master Intro I class elements

Pre-Alpha – Instruction focuses on one foot glides, forward swizzles, backwards wiggles, backward swizzles and exercises that build up to and reinforce those skills Prerequisite: Master Intro I and II class elements

.Alpha – Instruction focuses on forward stroking, forward crossovers, snowplow stops and exercises that build up to and reinforce those skills. Prerequisite: Master Pre-Alpha class elements

Beta – Instruction will focus on backward stroking, backward crossovers, T-stops and exercises that build up to and reinforce those skills. Prerequisite: Master Alpha class elements

Gamma – Instruction will focus on forward outside three turns, mohawk turn combinations, hockey stops and exercises that build up to and reinforce those skills. Prerequisite: Master Beta class elements

Delta – Instruction will focus on forward inside three turns, forward edges, shoot-the-ducks, lunges, bunny hops and exercises that build up to and reinforce those skills. Prerequisite: Master Gamma class elements

Jump and Spin – Designed for skaters at the freestyle I level and higher. Class is divided into small groups with similar ability and focus on the respective freestyle elements. Prerequisite: Master Delta class elements
